Martha Valco
In the early morning of Wednesday, 22 October 2025, Martha (Fayak) Valco, age 90, passed peacefully into eternal life following several years of advancing dementia. Martha was born Friday, 13 September 1935 in Commodore, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest daughter of Anna (Palisin) Fayak (1907-1986) and Joseph Fayak (1901-2001). Martha spent her early childhood on Douglas Street in the coal mining town of Commodore with her three older sisters, Anna (1926-2006), Mary (1927-2011), and Margaret (1931-2015). Around 1944, the family moved to Lakewood, Ohio where Martha attended the Slovak parish school, Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic School (grades 3-8) while living on Ridgewood Avenue. She graduated from Saint Stephen High School located near West 54th Street and Bridge Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduation Martha worked as a secretary for Ohio Match Company (in the former Marshall Building near Superior Avenue and West 3rd Street in downtown Cleveland). After first meeting in 1953, on 25 June 1955, at the age of nineteen, Martha married George Valco at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. This year, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Before the birth of their first son, Martha worked as a secretary for National Carbon located near West 117th Street and Madison Avenue. In 1960, they purchased their first house on Chesterland Avenue in Lakewood, Ohio and then in 1968 they moved the family to Hawkins Road in Westlake, Ohio where they lived for 54-years and were longtime parishioners of St Bernadette Catholic Church. Martha was the very proud mother of five sons who she devoted herself to raising: George Valco, spouse Nadine (MacLeod), Hilliard, Ohio; Mark Valco, spouse Amy Blenkhorn, Strongsville, Ohio, and granddaughter Laura Ulmenstine (Jacob) and great-grandchildren Emma, Anna, and Ian, and grandson Daniel (Emily) and great-granddaughter Eleanor, grandson Brian (Allison), and granddaughter Carolyn (Bryan Noller, fiancé); Jerome Valco, spouse Magda (Klein), Litchfield, Ohio, and grandson Justin (Anna); James Valco, spouse Laura Beth (Diederich), Riverview, Florida, and granddaughter of James, Taylor Young (Nicholas) and great-grandchildren Beckett and Sophie, and granddaughter of James, Tara; David Valco, spouse (Kimberly), North Olmsted, Ohio, and granddaughter Ashley and grandson Bradley. Martha highly valued Catholic education and was proud that her five sons attended Saint Edward High School in Lakewood. As “the boys” grew older, Martha found work as the cafeteria cashier at Magnificat High School in Rocky River. Martha and George treasured their Slovak heritage, language, foods, traditions, and music. In retirement, they looked forward to spending winter months in Naples and Punta Gorda, Florida and later acquired a condominium in Lake Suzy, Florida that they enjoyed for many years. Martha found great joy in baking, flower gardening, crafts, singing (in Slovak and English), playing piano, polkas, and family gatherings. As aging crept in, they moved to assisted living at Danbury – North Ridgeville where Martha received wonderful caring support. Martha was also predeceased by brothers-in-law Bernard Grospitch (1925-1991) (Anna), Paul Ondrus (1927-2011) (Mary), and Anthony Laco (1931-2020) (Margaret). A Funeral Liturgy for Martha Valco will take place on Monday, 27 October 2025 at 11:00 a.m. from Saint Bernadette Catholic Church, 2256 Clague Road, Westlake, Ohio. Visitation for family and friends will also take place on Monday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at McGorray – Hanna Funeral Homes, 25620 Center Ridge Road, Westlake, Ohio. Following the liturgy, a graveside ceremony and burial will take place at Saint Joseph Cemetery, 32789 Detroit Road, Avon, Ohio.
